What is God like?

“Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love.” (I John 4:7, 8 NIV)

My behavior toward other people reveals what my god is like and whether I know the true God.

Knowing God profoundly influences my behavior toward other people because God is love. That leads naturally to the question, “What is love like?” My answer to that question and my conformance to the answer reveals whether I know God. So, I need to ponder what love is like and compare that with how I behave.

Love is patient and kind, is generous and open with relationships. Am I like that?

Love is humble and thoughtful. Does that describe my attitudes?

Love honors the opinions and wishes of others over my own. Am I doing that?

Love is slow to become angry and forgets being wronged. Do I qualify?

Love rejoices when justice is done and is content when truth is told. How am I doing there?

Love persists in the face of loss and always believes in the best about others. Do I?

Love hopes unfailingly and never quits. Does that describe me?

Love is obedient and self-sacrificing. Does that characterize my relationships?

In what ways would the lives of people I know be better if I were like this?

Who do I need to apologize to for having failed to behave this way?

What does the way I behave reveal about my relationship with God?

What is the most important change I need to let God make in my behavior? Will I ask him to do that? Why, or why not?
